Abstract

The objective of the present work is the analysis of parenting skills from the influence on the criteria used in the psychological assessments of family processes, in relation to the professional training of the experts of the Department of Social Work and Psychology of the Judicial Branch of Costa Rica. We worked with a qualitative approach because it prioritizes access to experiences, interactions and documents in their natural context, in order to obtain those particularities of the object. Among the main findings of this research, it is shown that parenting skills is the central theme of assessments in family processes, and they will be evaluated in response to judicial questions. However, the personal and time resources are a limitation for the deepening. Constant updating is required in training and approach techniques, that allow exhaustive investigation to omit the criterion from the reality of each case. Today’s society still has misconceptions thoughts regarding patterns, mandates and gender roles that have a negative impact on parental exercise and violate the rights of minors.
